Roseau Well Inventory

The Roseau River watershed is the newest addition to the Seine-Rat River Conservation District (SRRCD) since it joined us in 2013. The watershed is comprised of the Municipalities of Franklin, Stuartburn, and Piney. Our field office opened in Vita in 2014 and it has been bustling ever since.

Our summer field staff went door-to-door in the Roseau River watershed to sample well water throughout the summers of 2014 and 2015. Well water samples were collected from willing residents and were tested for the presence of E. Coli and Coliform bacteria. Horizon Lab in Winnipeg analyzed the samples and sent the results directly to residents. This program was completely voluntary and free for the residents. The SRRCD collected a total of 693 well water samples to complete the well inventory.

The purpose of the water well inventory was to collect information about the location and condition of wells to better understand risks wellto the source of drinking water in the watershed. This program provided residents an opportunity to learn about the condition of their existing well and the importance of well maintenance. The well inventory also gave us an opportunity to establish our presence in the area by meeting one-on-one with local residents to promote the programs we offer.

Our abandoned well sealing program is part of our ongoing work to reduce the potential for groundwater contamination. Old wells that are not maintained can allow pollutants to directly enter the aquifer below. The SRRCD sealed 30 abandoned wells in the Roseau River watershed throughout the summers of 2014 and 2015.

The success of the SRRCD in the Roseau River watershed is largely a result of positive word-of-mouth advertising. Residents who experienced the value of the well inventory spread the word to their neighbours about the work we do. We were able to implement more of the programs we offer by initiating contact with residents throughout the watershed as part of our well inventory program.
